“The glass windows at Blackwell House utterly took my breathe away. To transform what is, fundamentally, painting with light into ceramic form has been a career journey that I have love more than anything else.” – Nicola Slaney
Blackwell The Arts and Crafts House, is a rare architectural gem, designed by noted architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott, and within each room, stained glass mullion windows are positioned either side of the fireplace with window seats built into the alcove where blue birds appear to be flying over the gardens themselves. Over two decades ago, Nicola’s triptych plaque utterly transformed the stained-glass effect – black lead work and panes of colour, tinged with the slightest ash-grey – into clay.
Nicola ushers back turquoise blue birds beak-to-beak, ruby tulips, and roundels created by leaves that mimic the famous iron work in the celebrated White Room. You can see this room in the buttermilk panels that shimmer like the late afternoon sun. Yet it the choreographed miniscule violet flowers, that showcase the very best of Moorcroft tubelining as well as a designer who continues to astound.
Memories of the Moorcroft Design Studio 25th Anniversary
The five women of the Moorcroft Design Studio are really something quite special. Each one has almost circumnavigated the globe in pursuit of inspiration from the natural world and to meet Moorcroft enthusiasts in far off places. This year, we celebrate the 25-years of the Moorcroft Design Studio with pieces inspired by some of the very best designs they have ever created; each piece holding a special MDS 25-year backstamp on the base to mark the occasion.
Rachel proved that a moonlit night in the New Forest can be a deeply spiritual experience within clay form; Emma showed the world that butterflies can, quite literally, flutter off the vase itself; Kerry proved that a parasol dance for a new generation can ignite colour and form into a unforgettable reverie; Vicky allows one of the most awesome visions in the world today – basking orca whales – to come full throttle in ceramic art, and Nicola celebrates the Moorcroft Design Studio’s 25-years through a house that harnesses the craft skills of a brilliant few.
