With its sky-piercing spire, its sleek, metallic adornment and its luxurious marble and metal-lined interiors, the Chrysler Building epitomizes its time: an era of wealth, industrial power, and large-scale city building. It is often said that architecture is a measure of civilization. If so, there may be few better artefacts of the short-lived epoch called the Roaring Twenties than the Chrysler Building. Ironically, the Art Deco Chrysler Building also marked the end of that dizzying period.

Designer, Vicky Lovatt, made it her mission to capture the essence of this glamourous New York skyscraper in clay. Inspired by the elevator doors in the lobby, Vicky pulled rectilinear patterns and applied them to a modern Moorcroft shape – where the edges make perfectly straight, converging lines. Her design incorporates chevrons, sunbursts, fountains, arc motifs and endless varieties of geometric patterns. Cleverly, the linework from the door patterns fans out to meet the forming lines of the Chrysler Building itself in her design. The entire piece is in varying shades of blue – a nod to the original building blueprint that Vicky enjoyed studying.
